How to Open Your Mind To New Possibilities

Are you someone who seeks out new possibilities willingly and with excitement? It is often said you need to keep an open mind when it comes to having success in life. But what does it mean and how do you manage it?

Many people go through life with a very limited view of what they think is possible. They might have dreams and goals, but they often don’t truly believe that they can actually achieve them. Because of this, they often self-sabotage or give up before they even get started.

Then, there are people who keep an open mind about what is possible for them. These people will be more likely to take action and achieve their goals. Why? What makes them different than the others. This group of people are open to new possibilities. They don’t allow themselves to be limited by their own beliefs. They know that if they set their sights high and take consistent action, anything is possible.

How Choice Overload Affects Us

Have you been to restaurant and handed a menu with many pages of food items to choose from? Or perhaps stood at the counter of a fast food place, staring at the multiple screens of choices. With so many options, you cannot make the simple decision of what to eat.

Choice overload is a real phenomenon that can lead us to make suboptimal choices. When we are faced with too many options, our brains go into “analysis paralysis” and we have a hard time making a decision. This can leave us feeling stressed, anxious, and uncertain.

Unfortunately, choice overload is becoming more and more common, It’s more than just food choices. With the advent of the internet, we now have access to more information—and even more choices—than ever before. The average person makes 35,000 decisions every day!  My brain is exploding just thinking about it.

The good news is that there are steps we can take to avoid choice overload and its negative effects. One of the best ways to do this is by training our brains to be more flexible and open to all possibilities.

Why Open-Mindedness Matters

Let’s first consider why it is important to be open-minded. By facing the world and decisions with an open attitude you can see the world in a different light. It helps us to be tolerant of others and to accept new ideas and perspectives, often leading to greater life satisfaction, happiness, and success.

In a study by the University of California Berkeley, researchers asked participants to rate their level of agreeableness – a personality trait that includes qualities like empathy and understanding. They found that those who were higher in agreeableness were also more likely to report higher levels of life satisfaction.

Similarly, another study, A Review on the Role of the Neuroscience of Flow States in the Modern World by Joshua Gold, and Joseph Ciorciari found that people who reported being more open-minded were also more likely to experience “flow states”—those moments of intense focus and enjoyment that are often associated with peak performance.

Both of these studies confirm, when we are open-minded, we are more likely to be engaged in our work and reach our full potential.

How To Be More Open-Minded

Now that you understand the importance of being more open-minded, are you interested in becoming more open-minded? Here are some things you can do:

  • Be curious: Ask questions and seek out new experiences.
  • Try something new: Step outside your comfort zone on a regular basis.

When we train our brains to be more flexible and open-minded, we lay the foundation for a happier, more successful life.
